view all San Francisco Neighborhoods
East of St. Francis Wood and south of Sherwood Forest, Westwood Highlands was originally developed by the Baldwin and Howell Company, who aimed to design a "middle-class commuter suburb" away from the bustling city center. Today, the neighborhood is more chi-chi than middle class, with beautiful homes along curvilinear streets on the south side of Mount Davidson, most affording an impressive view.
Westwood lays claim to a small commercial swath of Ocean Avenue, giving residents dining and shopping options without having to leave the neighborhood.
There are other commercial options nearby, as well as access to teh Balboa Park BART and nearby Interstate 280. Architecturally, bungalows are prevalent in a range of styles, including Craftsman, Spanish Revival, and English Cottage. Most of the homes were built in the early 1900s around a unique oval street layout. Property owners pay annual dues to help cover the maintenance of teh historic gates and the neighborhood landscaping.
